Athens Ring traffic restrictions to return this autumn

The Athens Ring traffic restriction measure is expected to return this autumn following the summer hiatus. The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and atmospheric pollution in the center of the capital by alternating access for odd and even license plate numbers within the Small Ring zone.

The Small Ring is defined by several major road axes, including Alexandras Avenue, Mesogeion Avenue, Pireas, and Konstantinoupolis Avenue, among others. While traffic remains normal on the boundary roads, restrictions apply to entering the interior zone.

Exemptions are expected for specific vehicle categories, including electric, hybrid, and natural gas or LPG vehicles. Additionally, certain Euro 6 vehicles meeting specific CO2 emission thresholds—under 120g CO2 (NEDC) for pre-2021 models or under 145g CO2 (WLTP) for post-2021 models—may qualify. Permanent residents of the Municipality of Athens can apply for digital circulation permits via the gov.gr platform using their TAXISnet credentials.
