Athens taxi driver arrested for allegedly robbing tourists

A 38-year-old taxi driver has been arrested in Athens on suspicion of robbery and threats following an incident involving a tourist family.

According to the Greek police, the driver picked up the family from Athens International Airport on the evening of August 13, 2026, for a trip to a hotel in the city center. While the standard night rate for this route is approximately 55 euros, the driver allegedly used violence and threats to force the passengers to pay 600 euros. The driver reportedly held the family's luggage hostage until the payment was made.

Following an investigation and the analysis of digital data, authorities issued an arrest warrant. The suspect was apprehended on August 25 and presented to the Athens prosecutor's office. Police emphasized that the arrest was based on the allegations of coercion and robbery rather than simply an inflated fare.
