Athens taxi driver helps woman give birth en route to Alexandra Hospital
A pregnant woman of Asian origin was being taken by taxi from the Patissia neighbourhood of Athens to the Alexandra Hospital. The driver, Panagiotis, realized she was in active labour and immediately called the Hellenic Police for assistance. Police patrol cars and two motorcycles arrived to clear a path, but the baby was born in the back seat of the taxi before the vehicle reached the hospital.
Both mother and newborn were reported to be in good health upon admission to Alexandra Hospital. The driver said the baby's first cry provided huge relief, thanked the police for their swift response, and noted he did not accept any payment for the ride.
