Athens Theater Square redevelopment sparks controversy
Kostas Bakoyannis and his political faction, ‘Athina Psila’, have criticized the Municipality of Athens regarding the redevelopment of Theater Square. They allege that instead of the planned green space and ‘hidden garden’ designed in 2021, the area is being paved with asphalt.
The controversy stems from changes made to the original plan following the discovery of archaeological findings. While the previous administration had planned an oasis with vegetation and water, Bakoyannis claims the current municipal administration froze the project for three years and is now delivering an asphalt-dominated space.
Bakoyannis is demanding transparency from the municipality, specifically calling for the immediate publication of the current study being implemented, the approvals for these changes, and documentation regarding the protection and highlighting of the archaeological finds to ensure compliance with funding terms.
