Athens to close Athena Street to cars for World Car Free Day

The Municipality of Athens is transforming Athena Street into a pedestrian-only zone for 24 hours to celebrate World Car Free Day and European Mobility Week. The event will take place from 20:00 on Saturday, September 19, until 20:00 on Sunday, September 20.

Activities scheduled for the weekend include an outdoor cinema, yoga and fitness sessions, and a ‘Sports Beyond Limits’ program featuring Paralympic sports organized by Panathinaikos A.C. Additionally, Bicycle Friendly Greece will host children's cycling tracks.

Due to these events, the Hellenic Police have announced significant traffic restrictions. Vehicle traffic will be suspended on Athena Street between Euripides and Ermou streets, as well as on several intersecting roads including Karagiorgi Serbia, Perikleous, Athinaidos, and Agia Irini. Drivers are advised to avoid the central area during this period to prevent congestion.
