Athens traffic restrictions expected to return this autumn

Traffic restrictions in central Athens, known as the ‘Ring’, are expected to return this autumn following the summer suspension. While an official date is pending a ministerial decision, historical patterns suggest the measure will reactivate in mid-October 2026, likely between the 12th and 26th.

The Small Ring defines a specific zone within central Athens where vehicle entry is restricted based on license plate numbers. The perimeter is bounded by major axes including Alexandras Avenue, Mesogeion Avenue, Syngrou Avenue, Piraeus, and Konstantinopoleos Avenue. Under the standard system, vehicles with odd-numbered plates circulate on odd days, while even-numbered plates circulate on even days.

Restrictions typically apply Monday through Thursday from 07:00 to 20:00, and Fridays from 07:00 to 15:00. The measures do not apply on weekends, public holidays, or during mass transit strikes. Additionally, a Large Ring exists which is activated only when pollution levels exceed specific thresholds, as determined by the Minister of Environment, Energy, and Climate Change.
