Athens traffic restrictions: Small Ring return and rules

The Small Ring traffic restriction system in central Athens is set to return following its summer suspension. The measure, which has been in place for decades, aims to reduce traffic congestion and atmospheric pollution by limiting vehicle access based on license plate numbers.

Under the established regulations, vehicles are permitted to enter the restricted zone on alternating days. Cars with license plates ending in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) are allowed on odd-numbered dates, while those with even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) are permitted on even-numbered dates. The restrictions typically apply Monday through Thursday from 07:00 to 20:00, and on Fridays from 07:00 to 15:00. No restrictions are enforced on weekends or public holidays.

The restricted area is defined by a perimeter of major streets, including Alexandras, Mesogeion, Pireos, and Syngrou avenues, among others. The summer suspension of these rules began on July 24, 2026, allowing unrestricted movement during the holiday period.
