Athens traffic restrictions to return this autumn
The traffic restriction measure known as the 'Daktylios' is set to return to central Athens this autumn following its summer hiatus. While the exact commencement date is pending a formal ministerial decision, the measure will once again regulate vehicle access to the city center.
The Small Ring consists of a specific perimeter of major boulevards, including Alexandra Avenue, Mesogeion Avenue, and Piraeus Street. Within this zone, vehicles that do not meet specific environmental criteria are prohibited from entering during active hours. Traffic remains free on the boundary roads themselves, but entry into the interior is restricted.
Exemptions are available for electric, hybrid, and certain natural gas or LPG vehicles, as well as permanent residents of the central area. Residents can apply for digital permits through the gov.gr platform using their TAXISnet credentials.
Additionally, a Large Ring exists which covers a broader part of the Athens urban area. This larger zone is only activated by the Minister of Environment, Energy, and Climate Change when pollution levels reach critical thresholds. When active, it imposes stricter regulations on private passenger and commercial vehicles based on license plate numbers.
