Athens traffic Ring to return in mid-October

The Athens Ring traffic restriction measure is expected to return to the center of Athens after its summer suspension. While the exact start date for the 2026-2027 period will be determined by a forthcoming ministerial decision, the implementation is anticipated to begin in mid-October.

The restrictions apply to the Small Ring area, defined by a perimeter including major axes such as Alexandras Avenue, Mesogeion Avenue, Syngrou Avenue, and Piraeus. Traffic limitations are based on the last digit of the vehicle license plate (odd or even numbers) and apply Monday through Thursday from 07:00 to 20:00, and on Fridays from 07:00 to 15:00. The measure does not apply on weekends, public holidays, or during mass transit strikes.

Violations of the restrictions incur a 100 euro fine. Certain vehicles are exempt and can move freely with a special electronic signal issued via gov.gr. These include purely electric vehicles, factory-made hybrids, and vehicles using natural gas or LPG. For Euro 6 hybrid vehicles, exemptions depend on specific CO2 emission limits.
