Athens traffic ring to return this autumn

The Athens traffic ring, a measure to restrict vehicle access in the city center, is expected to return this autumn following its summer hiatus. The exact commencement date will be established via an upcoming ministerial decision.

The Small Ring is defined by a specific perimeter of central boulevards and streets. Within this zone, vehicles that do not meet specific environmental requirements are prohibited from entering during the measure's active hours. Exceptions are provided for electric, hybrid, and certain natural gas or LPG vehicles, as well as permanent residents of the center who can obtain digital permits through the gov.gr platform.

There is also a Large Ring that encompasses a broader part of the Athens urban area. This larger zone is activated less frequently, typically only when pollution levels exceed specific thresholds as determined by the Minister of Environment, Energy, and Climate Change. During Large Ring activation, private passenger and freight vehicle traffic is restricted within the Small Ring, and movement within the Large Ring is subject to restrictions based on license plate numbers.
