Athens tram network to increase service frequency from September 7
A new operational plan for the Athens tram network will be implemented starting Monday, September 7, to increase service frequency and reduce passenger wait times. The initiative, supported by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Giorgos Kotsiras, aims to enhance transport capacity for the approximately 55,000 daily passengers serving the city center and coastal areas.
The plan focuses on two primary lines. On Line 6 (Syntagma-Pikrodaphni), daily trips will increase from 232 to 244, with morning wait times dropping from 9 minutes to 7 minutes and 30 seconds, and afternoon wait times decreasing to 8 minutes and 10 seconds. On Line 7 (Asklepieio Voulas-Sef), daily trips will rise from 189 to 205, reducing average intervals from 12 minutes to 9 minutes and 50 seconds.
To support these changes, the number of trams in simultaneous circulation during morning peak hours will increase from 23 to 27. The operational schedule also includes two reserve trams and one unit designated for preventive maintenance. STASY officials noted that the expansion is accompanied by investments in human resources, including the hiring of new drivers to ensure smooth operations.
