Greece launches National Dialogue on New Lyceum and National Diploma reforms

The Greek Ministry of Education has launched a new phase of the National Dialogue regarding the implementation of a ‘New Lyceum’ and a ‘National Diploma’. This reform aims to shift the focus of secondary education from mere exam preparation to a more holistic development of students, emphasizing 21st-century skills, critical thinking, and creativity.

During an event at the Athens Concert Hall, Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki announced that the Interim Report from the Dialogue Committee will be submitted for consultation with political parties and educational bodies within the coming week. Furthermore, a digital platform is expected to be operational by the end of September, allowing students, parents, and teachers to submit their views and suggestions.

The proposed National Diploma would serve as the primary basis for university entrance, potentially replacing the current minimum entry requirements. The plan includes evaluating a student's entire academic journey through a digital student folder and utilizing independent evaluators to ensure objectivity. The Ministry emphasized that the reform is not intended to make school easier, but rather to make it fairer by recognizing consistent effort rather than relying solely on a single examination period.
