Athlete Recovery: Cold Plunge Therapy Rising; Study Shows Muscle Power Predicts Longevity
Cold water immersion, often called cold plunge therapy, is increasingly used by athletes to reduce post‑workout soreness and speed recovery. The method involves brief exposure to chilled water, which constricts blood vessels and triggers a circulatory response that many athletes report lessens stiffness and prepares them for the next training session. Modern plunge systems maintain a steady temperature, making the practice more convenient than traditional ice baths, though scientific evidence of its benefits remains mixed.
A separate 10‑year study of nearly 4,000 adults found that muscle power—defined as the ability to generate force quickly—better predicts longevity than sheer strength. Participants with low muscle power faced a six‑ to seven‑fold higher risk of mortality, even after accounting for age and health history, while strength alone showed little impact. The authors recommend training for power using light loads (30‑40% of max) moved with maximal speed, such as explosive rows, kettlebell swings, and sprinting, to maintain balance, independence, and overall health into older age.
