Athletics Federation of Nigeria warns athletes against unfavorable contracts
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has issued a warning to Nigerian athletes regarding unfavorable contracts, emphasizing that the federation is committed to protecting their long-term welfare. AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa stated that the organization is monitoring agreements to intervene if deals are deemed detrimental to the athletes or the interests of Nigeria.
Okowa clarified that the AFN has not partnered with any agents or agencies to provide scholarships, urging families to exercise caution. The federation specifically noted that minor athletes should not enter agreements without parental or legal guardian consent to prevent negative impacts on their education and national representation. The AFN recently advised an athlete to terminate a contract with an agent and a school after determining it was not in their best interest.
Additionally, the AFN announced it will not work with Auburn University in the United States as long as a specific coach remains at the institution, citing concerns that the coach discourages Nigerian athletes from representing their country.
