Athletics honors Yunaira Piña and examines sports earnings gap

In Venezuela, the Zulia Athletics Association honored coach Yunaira Piña Solarte for her 50-year career. The tribute, held at the Elsa Antúnez track at the University of Zulia, celebrated her long-standing contribution to regional and national athletics, as well as her personal victory over breast cancer.

In a separate sports economic analysis, Dominican sprinter Marileidy Paulino’s earnings highlight the significant pay gap between track and field and major commercial sports. During her 2026 international season, Paulino earned approximately US$345,000 in prize money from various Diamond League and World Athletics events. In contrast, professional athletes in leagues like the NBA earn significantly more per game; for example, NBA player Karl-Anthony Towns’ projected salary equates to over US$696,000 per game.
