Athol committee selects Lincoln Avenue site for proposed skate park

The Athol Open Space and Recreation Review Committee has voted to support a town-owned property off Lincoln Avenue as the site for a proposed skate park and other recreational uses. The selected location is a field near the back entrance to Silver Lake Park that previously housed tennis courts and offers over 10,000 square feet of space.

Director of Planning and Community Development Eric Smith reviewed 158 town property assessment records to identify potential sites. Committee members noted that the Lincoln Avenue property provides advantages such as existing parking, access to bathrooms, water, and electricity. The site's proximity to the Department of Public Works may also simplify maintenance.

Members suggested the location could serve as a broader recreational hub, similar to Unity Park in Turners Falls, potentially accommodating a suite of activities including playgrounds or splash pads. The proposal will now be presented to the Selectboard for final approval.
