Brazilian cities launch extensive road and waterway upgrades

The municipality of Atibaia reported that its public services department manually mowed over 1.6 million m² of streets and sidewalks between April and June, covering an area equivalent to 230 football fields and aiming to improve hygiene and reduce disease‑vector habitats.

In São José, officials widened a bottleneck on the Rio Forquilhas from 10 m to 40 m, removed more than 100 sediment containers – over a thousand cubic metres – and announced that the work will lower flood risk for hundreds of families. “We are widening the river … to increase flow capacity,” said infrastructure secretary Nardi Arruda.

Sorocaba’s water utility began preventive cleaning of a 750‑metre stretch of the Mineirão creek, using excavators to extract sediments and debris to keep the channel functional during heavy rains.

Itabuna started a road‑restructuring project that creates a roundabout near the city council and adapts traffic flow for a new bridge linking Avenida Amélia Amado with the Conceição district.

Três Rios inaugurated works on Rua Antônio Fernandes Ribeiro, installing a new storm‑water drainage system and upgrading water and sewage networks before paving, a development promised by Mayor Jonas Dico after a 40‑year waiting period.
