Atibaia authorities issue pet heat safety guidelines
Due to extreme temperatures in Atibaia, Brazil, the Municipal Secretariat of Environment and Animal Defense has issued guidance for pet owners to prevent heat stress and health risks in dogs and cats. Key recommendations include providing continuous access to fresh, clean water in shaded areas and avoiding walks during peak sun hours to prevent paw burns from hot asphalt.
Owners are advised to monitor for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting or heavy salivation. High-risk groups include puppies, elderly animals, obese pets, and brachycephalic breeds with short snouts. While hydration is critical, experts note that supplemental liquids like coconut water or chamomile tea can be offered in moderation to stimulate intake, provided they contain no sugar or additives and do not replace fresh water.
