Atiku Abubakar calls for Nigerian police salary and pension review

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently review the salaries of serving police officers and address the welfare of retired personnel. Abubakar highlighted the disparity between police remuneration and the recent pay increase approved for members of the Armed Forces.

Citing extreme hardship, Abubakar noted that some retired officers receive monthly pensions as low as ₦29,000, an amount he argued is insufficient for basic living expenses. He shared accounts of retired personnel struggling with hunger and illness, including a former Assistant Commissioner of Police who was reportedly found begging in Abuja.

In addition to salary adjustments, the former Vice-President demanded clarity on the status of the Police Exit Bill to ensure more secure retirement arrangements for those who have served the country.
