Atiku Abubakar pledges to restore Nigeria fuel subsidy for 2027
Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for 2027, has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring a targeted fuel subsidy in Nigeria. He argues that a nation with Nigeria's resources should not allow its citizens to endure extreme economic hardship caused by rising fuel, transport, and food costs.
Atiku clarified that his proposal is not a return to the previous import-based subsidy system. Instead, he envisions a targeted, capped, and independently audited regime tied to the expansion of domestic refining capacity to ensure relief reaches those in need while supporting local production.
The proposal has met significant opposition. The Presidency criticized the plan for policy inconsistency and questioned its funding, with aides suggesting it could cost Nigeria N19.1 trillion annually. Additionally, the Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) warned that restoring subsidies could discourage foreign direct investment, potentially resulting in a loss of over $50 billion.
Other stakeholders, including the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and political opponent Peter Obi, have expressed skepticism. While Obi criticized the mismanagement of current subsidy savings, NANS argued that the previous subsidy regime was fiscally unsustainable and encouraged smuggling. Meanwhile, Atiku has stated he will boycott presidential debates unless President Bola Tinubu and the APC are included in the discussions.
