Atiku Abubakar pledges to restore fuel subsidy in 2027 campaign
Nigeria's political landscape is intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections. Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has pledged to restore the petrol subsidy if elected. Abubakar questioned the transparency of the current administration, asking for accountability regarding the funds saved from the subsidy's removal.
This proposal has drawn sharp criticism from political rivals. FCT Minister Nyesom Wike described Abubakar as an inconsistent leader and a ‘voodoo economist,’ noting that Abubakar had previously supported subsidy removal. The All Progressives Congress (APC) also condemned the pledge, labeling it a desperate attempt to exploit public hardship.
In response, the Presidency has challenged Abubakar to provide a detailed fiscal and legal framework for his plan, warning that reintroducing the subsidy could increase public debt and reduce funding for essential services. Meanwhile, Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Party has formally launched his 2027 campaign, calling on all candidates to engage voters directly and defend their political records.
