Atiku Urges Suspension of Nigeria's Works Minister Over Nurse's Death
Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend Minister of Works David Umahi while an independent investigation is carried out into the death of 26‑year‑old nurse Mary Habila. Habila died at Umahi's private residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State on June 27, 2026. Atiku said the case requires a credible, transparent probe, the transfer of the inquiry to the Federal Police Headquarters, an independent autopsy, and protection for the victim's family from intimidation.
He criticised the federal government's silence and argued that accountability is essential when a high‑ranking official is involved. Umahi has denied wrongdoing and has called for an autopsy. Atiku emphasized that his demand does not imply guilt, but reflects the minimum standard of public accountability in a democracy.
