Atizapán youth propose shelter for children facing domestic violence

During the Second Youth Council (Cabildo Juvenil) in Atizapán de Zaragoza, local youth presented several proposals aimed at improving municipal security, sports, and social welfare. A primary focus was the proposal by student Paola Lizeth Contreras López to establish a 'Casa Hogar' (shelter home) for children and adolescents who are victims of domestic violence, abandonment, or family disintegration.

Contreras López emphasized that while the municipal DIF performs social assistance, there is a lack of permanent residential spaces to provide specialized and integral care. The proposed shelter would initially accommodate 20 to 30 beneficiaries. The urgency of this initiative is underscored by data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), which recorded 668 cases of domestic violence in Atizapán in 2025.

Other youth-led proposals included the creation of a Diversity Care Module (MOADI), the establishment of safe routes for students to improve security during school commutes, and the promotion of sports in public spaces to encourage healthy community coexistence.
