Atlanta and Jefferson schools investigate racism allegations
Atlanta Public Schools and Jefferson City Schools are conducting investigations following allegations of racist behavior during a high school football game on September 11. The incident involved students from Maynard Jackson High School traveling to Jefferson High School in Jackson County.
Atlanta Public Schools confirmed receiving reports that members of the Maynard Jackson marching band were subjected to racist language while loading buses and departing the stadium. While the district stated that no students were physically harmed, parents have reported more severe allegations via social media and news outlets. These include claims that racial slurs were directed at students, Confederate flags were displayed, and a football player was spat on following a tackle.
Jefferson City Schools has stated it is aware of the online concerns and is reviewing the claims in coordination with Maynard Jackson officials to determine appropriate next steps.
