Atlanta ATC and American Airlines pilot dispute takeoff clearance

An argument occurred between an American Airlines pilot and an air traffic controller at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on September 13, 2026. The dispute arose after American flight AA1428, an Airbus A319 bound for Philadelphia, was cleared for takeoff on runway 27R shortly after a Delta Boeing 757 had departed.

The American Airlines pilot requested additional separation from the preceding aircraft due to concerns regarding wake turbulence. In response, the tower controller canceled the takeoff clearance and instructed the American Airlines crew to vacate the runway, subsequently clearing a Frontier Airlines aircraft to taxi onto the runway instead.
