Atlanta Braves recall AJ Smith-Shawver to start against Twins

The Atlanta Braves have recalled right-handed pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett to join the active roster. Smith-Shawver is scheduled to make a start on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis.

This roster move shifts the rotation schedule, as ace left-hander Chris Sale was originally slated to start Wednesday but has been moved to Friday to allow for additional rest. To make room for Smith-Shawver, the Braves have designated right-hander Tyler Kinley for assignment. Kinley has struggled recently, allowing nine home runs over his last 28 2/3 innings and blowing four saves during that span.

Smith-Shawver, 23, is returning from a period that included season-ending Tommy John surgery in June 2025. He recently performed well in Triple-A, earning International League Pitcher of the Week honors in mid-August.
