Atlanta City Council to decide on Peachtree Circle historic district

A proposal to create a historic district on Peachtree Circle in Atlanta's Ansley Park has cleared two major hurdles. The Neighborhood Planning Unit‑E and the Atlanta Zoning Review Board both voted unanimously to support the designation, after a series of six public meetings with residents and city officials.

The Atlanta City Council will hold the final vote at its meeting on Aug. 24 or Sept. 8. The effort was sparked by the demolition of the 205 Peachtree Circle Craftsman home in January, prompting preservationists to seek protection for the block. Residents have voiced concerns about potential impacts on property values, taxes and renovation requirements. A request for a 60‑day continuance to obtain an independent appraisal was denied. This is the third attempt to secure historic status for the area, after a failed bid in 2022.

Key figures include resident Drew Gandy, ZRB board member Lauren Welsh, and Keyetta Holmes of the Office of Zoning and Development. The historic district would encompass the Randolph‑Lucas‑Jones House, a landmark moved to Peachtree Circle in 1924 and renovated by preservation advocate Christopher M. Jones.
