Atlanta Falcons’ 2026 quarterback battle between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa

The Atlanta Falcons are entering the 2026 season with a contested starting quarterback role. Third‑year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is still recovering from a third ACL surgery and has not been cleared for 11‑on‑11 drills, leaving him unable to fully participate in minicamp. Coach Kevin Stefanski has given veteran Tua Tagovailoa the majority of first‑team reps, allowing him to build chemistry with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees’s system and with key weapons such as running back Bijan Robinson and receivers Drake London and Zachariah Branch.

Falcons quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt noted that the competition cannot be fully evaluated until Penix is at the same physical level as Tagovailoa. Analysts have voiced concerns about Penix’s durability; a Bleacher Report piece predicts a “bust” for Penix in 2026, citing his injury history. Penix’s 2025 stats showed a 60.1% completion rate, 1,982 passing yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. In contrast, Tagovailoa entered the offseason leading the league in passer rating (2022), passing yards (2023) and completion percentage (2024), and recently threw a touchdown in a red‑zone 11‑on‑11 drill.

Both quarterbacks are expected to see playing time early in the season, but Tagovailoa currently holds the advantage in the Falcons’ quarterback competition.
