Atlanta Falcons QB Race Stalls as Tagovailoa and Penix Remain Injured

Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski disclosed that starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is dealing with a minor back injury that “flared up” during the first days of training camp. He said the issue is not expected to be long‑term and that Tagovailoa should be back to practice “sooner rather than later.”

Meanwhile, former first‑round pick Michael Penix Jr. is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. He has not been cleared for 11‑on‑11 drills and could miss several weeks before returning to full team work. Because both potential starters are unavailable, the Falcons have added veteran quarterback Cooper Rush after releasing Trevor Siemian, and undrafted rookie Jack Strand has been given first‑team quarterback reps in camp. The team also confirmed that running back Bijan Robinson is holding out on a contract extension and did not practice on the second day.

These developments leave the Falcons’ quarterback battle on hold while the coaching staff manages depth and injury recovery ahead of the regular season.
