Atlanta Falcons bring in Tua Tagovailoa as potential starter amid Michael Penix Jr. injury concerns

The Atlanta Falcons signed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a one‑year veteran‑minimum contract worth about $1.2‑$1.3 million after his release from Miami. The move gives the Falcons a low‑risk option who could start if highly drafted rookie Michael Penix Jr. is not ready following a torn ACL that ended his 2025 season. Penix, the team’s 2024 eighth‑overall pick, has a history of serious injuries, raising doubts about his durability as a franchise quarterback.

Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said the competition for the starting job will be open once Penix is fully healthy, with Tagovailoa already able to practice at full speed.
