Atlanta Falcons face backlash over retro social media logo

The Atlanta Falcons have encountered significant social media controversy after updating their profile pictures with a graphic intended to honor the franchise’s 1966 inaugural season. The artwork, which featured a stylized black falcon set against vertical red, white, black, and gold stripes, drew widespread comparisons to Nazi-era iconography and German military banners.

The backlash on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) was immediate, with the post garnering tens of millions of views and triggering a wave of memes, including nicknames such as “The Bird Reich.” While the design was meant to promote a throwback uniform weekend ahead of a matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, the combination of the angular bird logo and the specific color scheme and stripe pattern led to intense criticism regarding the team’s branding choices.

Sports logo historian Chris Creamer noted that while there was “absolutely no ill intent” and the update was a common practice for teams celebrating heritage, the visual resemblance was unmistakable. Following the viral criticism, the Falcons reportedly updated their social media profiles again, replacing the controversial graphic with a standard image of a red football helmet.
