Atlanta Falcons to start Cooper Rush after Tua Tagovailoa injury
The Atlanta Falcons face a significant quarterback crisis heading into their Week 1 season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Planned starter Tua Tagovailoa has been ruled out due to an oblique injury sustained during practice.
Veteran Cooper Rush has been named the starter to replace Tagovailoa. Despite reporting back spasms on Saturday, the team expects Rush to play. The Falcons' depth is further strained as Michael Penix Jr. remains unavailable while recovering from a torn ACL. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand is positioned as the primary backup should Rush be unable to continue.
Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski noted that while the situation is not ideal, Rush has the experience necessary to manage the offense. The matchup remains a challenge as the Falcons look to establish their running game through Bijan Robinson to mitigate the impact of the sudden change at quarterback.
