Atlanta Falcons quarterback competition shifts as Penix recovers from injury
The Atlanta Falcons' quarterback competition has become more defined as Tua Tagovailoa takes the lead for the starting position. Tagovailoa, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, is expected to lead the first-team offense during the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos.
Michael Penix Jr. is currently sidelined while recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee sustained in November 2025. Due to his injury, Penix has been limited to 7-on-7 drills and has not yet been cleared for 11-on-11 team activities. As a result, he is not expected to participate in the upcoming preseason game.
