Atlanta Falcons rookie Anterio Thompson faces career-ending spinal condition
Atlanta Falcons rookie defensive tackle Anterio Thompson has revealed that a genetic mutation in his spinal cord will prevent him from playing football again. Thompson, who was selected by the Falcons in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, shared the news via social media, stating he was informed of the condition on May 8, 2026.
Thompson has been on the team’s Non-Football-Injury (NFI) list since the start of training camp and has not played any minutes this season. While he has not formally announced his retirement, he noted the difficulty of transitioning from professional highs to such a significant medical low.
Previously a standout at the University of Washington, Thompson was noted for his exceptional speed, recording a 4.73-second 40-yard dash during his pro day. Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski has not provided specific details regarding the medical diagnosis.
