Atlanta man hospitalized after mistaking hair relaxer for ice cream

An Atlanta man was rushed to the emergency room after accidentally consuming hair relaxer that he mistook for ice cream. The product, Mizani Butter Blend, was stored in a refrigerator by his wife, who had used it earlier that day to touch up her hair.

The relaxer’s creamy texture and scent, derived from ingredients like shea butter and honey, contributed to the confusion in dim lighting. Ingesting such products can be extremely dangerous; they often contain chemicals like ammonium thioglycolate, guanidine hydroxide, or sodium hydroxide, which are designed to break down hair structure.

Medical experts note that swallowing hair straighteners can cause severe internal damage, including burns to the mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines, as well as vomiting and abdominal pain.
