Atlanta teacher goes viral for creating classroom “gas station”
Candy Sydney-Browning, a second-grade teacher at Dobbs Elementary School in Atlanta, has gained widespread attention after implementing a creative solution to manage classroom distractions caused by students passing gas.
To address odors and prevent interruptions to her lessons, Sydney-Browning established a designated area in the back of her classroom labeled “The gusty winds.” This “gas station” allows students to handle bodily functions away from their peers without needing to ask for permission or leave the room, ensuring that instruction continues uninterrupted. Sydney-Browning noted that the setup has become a normal part of the classroom routine and helps prevent students from blaming one another.
A TikTok video showcasing the concept went viral, garnering millions of views and attracting significant support. The brand Febreze donated pallets of air fresheners and supplies intended to last the classroom for two years, while other community members provided classroom gifts such as snacks and furniture.
