Atlanta track stadium proposal sparks infrastructure and flooding concerns

In Atlanta, the Atlanta Track Club has proposed a $100 million indoor track stadium on land owned by Atlanta Public Schools. The proposal has drawn criticism from residents and environmental advocates who argue the project may interfere with long-term flood mitigation efforts.

The proposed site in the Summerhill area was previously identified as a location for the Connally vault, a massive stormwater storage device designed to alleviate pressure on the city’s aging water infrastructure and help satisfy a federal consent decree. Residents expressed concern that prioritizing the stadium over critical green infrastructure could exacerbate flooding issues in local Black communities, particularly following a recent 18-foot-deep sinkhole caused by a damaged pipe in the area.
