Atlantic basin monitoring three systems for potential tropical development

Meteorologists are monitoring three distinct areas in the Atlantic basin for potential tropical cyclone development. The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional reports that the most significant threat is a potential low-pressure area south of the Cape Verde Islands, which has a 50 percent probability of developing into a cyclone within seven days.

Another system is currently located approximately 2,840 kilometers east-northeast of Quintana Roo, with a 30 percent chance of development over the next week. A third, more distant disturbance in the northeastern Atlantic holds a 10 percent chance of development.

Forecasters note that while these systems are being watched, a strengthening El Niño pattern and Saharan dust plumes may influence activity. El Niño typically creates hostile wind conditions that can limit hurricane formation in the Atlantic, though some simulations suggest a tropical wave could survive these conditions to become a hurricane as it moves north of the Caribbean.
