Atlantic hurricane season shows unpredictable patterns in 2026
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has deviated from historical norms. While September is typically the busiest month for tropical activity, the month passed without a single hurricane. Instead, the season's first hurricane, Isaias, developed in October, eventually strengthening into a Category 3 major hurricane that impacted the northern Gulf Coast.
Meteorologists attribute the historically quiet Atlantic season to a strong El Niño, which generates high-altitude winds that hinder tropical development. Despite these conditions, long-range forecasts suggest potential tropical development in the western Caribbean heading into mid-November. While the current threat remains low, experts are monitoring the area for possible low-pressure systems as the season approaches its November 30 conclusion.
