Atlantic salmon reintroduction in the Rhine faces ongoing challenges

Efforts to reintroduce Atlantic salmon to the Rhine river have shown progress, though a self-sustaining population has not yet been established. A six-year research project titled ‘Genetic Monitoring for the Reintroduction of Salmon in the Rhine Region’ (GeMoLaR) has evaluated the effectiveness of stocking measures and the extent of natural reproduction.

Currently, more than one million young salmon from hatcheries in Germany and France are released annually into ecologically suitable tributaries of the Rhine. These efforts follow the natural life cycle of the migratory fish, which hatch in cool, clear waters and migrate to the sea as smolts by age two before returning to their home waters to spawn.

The findings from the GeMoLaR project, which utilized genetic analysis to track reintroduction success, have been compiled into a new practical guide to assist with future management and conservation strategies.
