Atlantic tropical cyclone activity increases in August
Meteorologists report a significant increase in tropical cyclone activity within the tropical Atlantic basin, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, during the month of August. According to Luis Enrique Ramos Guadalupe of the Cuban Meteorological Society, the second half of August and the first half of September represent the peak period of cyclonic activity for the season.
For Cuba, August is identified as the third most dangerous month for hurricane strikes, following October and September. Historical data from 1791 to 2022 shows that 19 hurricanes affected the country during the month of August, accounting for 16% of all recorded hurricanes in that period. Notable historical storms mentioned include Hurricane Charley in 2004 and Hurricane Gustav in 2008, the latter of which produced a recorded wind gust of 340 km/h in Paso Real de San Diego.
