Atle McAdam, former Norwegian hurdles record holder, dies in cycling accident

Former Norwegian 400m hurdles record holder Atle McAdam has died at age 49 following a cycling accident in Nordre Follo. McAdam, a three-time national champion, held the Norwegian record for ten years starting in 2003.

The accident occurred on Gamle Mosseveien when McAdam, who was part of a cycling group, collided with a car driven by a woman in her 80s. Police investigations suggest McAdam may have crossed into the oncoming lane. While the driver has been formally charged, authorities noted that the basis for suspicion against her has weakened.

McAdam was a close associate and training partner of Olympic champion Karsten Warholm, often serving in a role similar to an assistant coach. Following the news, Warholm and the Norwegian mixed relay team dedicated their European Championship gold medal in Birmingham to McAdam’s memory.
