Real Madrid loses appeal on LaLiga‑CVC deal as courts uphold agreement and nullify club exclusion

Spain’s Audiencia Provincial in Madrid has rejected the joint appeal filed by Real Madrid and Athletic Club, confirming the full validity of LaLiga’s agreement with private‑equity fund CVC. The court affirmed that the deal, approved in the December 2021 extraordinary general assembly, does not transfer audiovisual rights to CVC but provides a €2 billion financing package in exchange for a 10 % share of TV revenue for 50 years, while guaranteeing that clubs that did not join the scheme will not bear its costs.

Earlier, the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that the decisions of LaLiga president Javier Tebas that barred Real Madrid (and Barcelona) from several control‑organ meetings in 2022 were legally null and void. Real Madrid welcomed that ruling but said the higher court’s judgment on the CVC agreement does not answer “questions of extraordinary legal, economic and institutional relevance” and announced it will lodge a petition for cassation before the Supreme Court.

LaLiga hailed the Audiencia’s ruling as a reinforcement of legal certainty for the ‘Impulso’ plan, while the clubs maintain that the agreement threatens the governance and financial model of Spanish professional football.
