Seismic activity reported across Caribbean and Latin America

Recent seismic activity has been reported across several regions in Central and South America. In the Dominican Republic, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred near Punta Cana in the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Mona Passage. This event was accompanied by several smaller tremors, including magnitudes of 3.0, 2.9, and 1.9. Authorities have advised residents to remain calm, noting that such activity is common in the region due to the interaction of the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates.

In Colombia, the Servicio Geológico Colombiano recorded two earthquakes near Istmina, Chocó, with magnitudes of 3.9 and 3.7 occurring just 12 minutes apart. These tremors were felt in various municipalities, including Sipí and Trujillo.

In Panama, experts from the Instituto de Geociencias highlighted the high risk in the Chiriquí region, where the Nazca, Cocos, and Panama microplates converge. Officials warned that in this triple junction zone, residents might have as little as 5 to 10 seconds to evacuate if a major earthquake occurs.

Meanwhile, in Honduras, Copeco has emphasized the need for increased disaster preparedness. Officials noted that while large, destructive earthquakes are infrequent, the country remains in a geologically active zone with significant fault systems, leading to a decline in public perception of risk over time.
