Atlético de Madrid delays LaLiga opener because of World Cup semifinals
Atlético de Madrid will postpone its scheduled LaLiga debut against Málaga, originally set for the weekend of 15‑16 August, to later in the season. The delay follows the participation of several Atlético players in the FIFA World Cup semifinals – including Spain internationals and Argentine players – which triggers the collective bargaining agreement that grants a three‑week rest after the tournament. LaLiga president Javier Tebas explained that the first matchday will be split, with Atlético’s first league game now set for the second round against Villarreal on the weekend of 23 August, followed by the Málaga fixture in the third round.
At the same time, the club held its preseason training at the Metropolitado, featuring the debut of former Barcelona midfielder Gabi as Diego Pablo Simeone’s new assistant. With most first‑team regulars away at the World Cup, only ten senior players trained alongside a large group of academy prospects. Danish player Hjulmand attended the presentation but did not take part in the session.
