Atlético de Madrid retains Mexican midfielder Obed Vargas
Atlético de Madrid has decided to retain Mexican midfielder Obed Vargas for the upcoming season instead of proceeding with a planned loan move. Despite interest from several clubs, including Sevilla, Alavés, and Getafe, the club opted to keep the player within the first-team squad managed by Diego Simeone.
Vargas, who joined from the Seattle Sounders with a contract running until June 2030, had been linked to various La Liga sides in search of more playing time. While other players such as José María Giménez, Thomas Lemar, and Carlos Martín were granted loans to clubs like Deportivo La Coruña, Elche, and Almería, the club blocked any exit for Vargas.
The midfielder is expected to compete for a position in a highly competitive midfield alongside players like Koke and Marcos Llorente. His decision to stay follows a preseason performance that included scoring in a 4-1 victory against Getafe.
