Atlético Mineiro defeats Montevideo City Torque 3-0 in Sudamericana semifinal
Atlético Mineiro secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Montevideo City Torque in the first leg of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana semifinals at the Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte. The Brazilian side established a significant advantage heading into the second leg, which will be played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo on October 21.
Reinier opened the scoring in the 37th minute following an offensive buildup involving Cuello and Victor Hugo. Five minutes later, Bernard doubled the lead after intercepting a pass and finishing a counter-attack. Although Atlético had two goals by Renan Lodi and Lyanco disallowed for offside early in the match, they maintained dominance throughout. Thiago Borbas sealed the win in the 80th minute with a strike following a cross from Renan Lodi.
With this result, Atlético Mineiro can afford to lose by up to two goals in the return leg to advance to the final. Montevideo City Torque faces a difficult task, needing to win by at least four goals to qualify directly or three goals to force a penalty shootout. The match also highlighted strong performances from goalkeeper Gabriel Delfim and top scorers Reinier and Bernard, who both reached ten goals for the season.
