Atlético Nacional appoints Lucas González as new head coach
Colombian club Atlético Nacional announced Lucas González as its new director técnico on 9 July 2026, marking the start of a new era for the team. González, previously in charge of the club's youth sides and most recently coaching Deportes Tolima, joined Nacional after the two clubs activated a bilateral exit clause, which Nacional paid to secure his services.
The announcement introduced González’s coaching staff, including assistants Tiago Pina, Camilo Cartagena, Luis Restrepo and former club idol Alexis Henríquez. González also spoke of his personal dream of returning to the historic club and outlined plans to reinforce the squad for the second half of the season. In his first training session, he halted practice to address a player’s comments, emphasizing discipline and teamwork.
The appointment underscores Nacional’s intent to rebuild the squad after the departure of five players and hints at possible future moves for goalkeeper Franco Armani, though no decision has been confirmed.
