Atlus producer reveals Persona 3 saved the franchise from ending

Atlus producer Kazuhisa Wada has revealed that the Persona franchise could have ended after Persona 2. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Wada explained that following the second installment, there were no immediate plans for a third game, and the series faced the possibility of disappearing.

To prevent the franchise from remaining a niche product for core fans, the development of Persona 3 served as a critical turning point. The team intentionally overhauled the series by introducing new mechanics like Social Links and improving the user interface and gameplay to appeal to a broader audience. Wada noted that the team looked to the Tales of series as a reference to move away from the company's reputation of being exclusively focused on hardcore enthusiasts.

Yusuke Tomizawa, a producer for the Tales of series, also participated in the discussion, noting that the high quality of the user interface in Persona 3 was particularly striking during its development.
