ATM Milano and ATAC Rome targeted by SMS phishing scam

The Italian Postal Police has issued a warning about a new wave of fraudulent SMS messages that appear to come from ATM Milano and ATAC Rome. The texts claim that the recipient has an unpaid Tap&Go fare – citing terms such as “convalida incompleta” or “corsa non registrata” – and demand immediate payment through a link. The link leads to a counterfeit website designed to steal personal and banking information.

Both transport operators have confirmed that they never request payments via SMS and have asked passengers not to click on any links or provide personal data. The Police advise users to delete the messages, refrain from entering any credentials, and contact official channels if in doubt. One statement reads, “the transport companies and the Tap&Go service do not require settlements via SMS.”
